As someone who collects photography, besides understanding and learning about it, I am always intrigued by how and what other people collect. If there are other books that I should know about, let me know.

ReplyDeleteMy long-term favorite is Carroll T. Hartwell's The Making of a Collection: Photographs from The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Aperture, 1984). Ted Hartwell started the MIA's photography collection in the 1960s and built it to over 4,000 pieces by the mid-1980s. His essay here stresses education and looking. The selection of reproduced images makes a case for his informed subjectivity. And a transcribed dialogue with Frank Gohlke adds an important dimension as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks George. I'll try and track down the book. Hope all is well.
